Artist Statement
SOL (she/her) is an interdisciplinary artist, orator, and philosopher.
Her practice spans movement, writing, experimental design, installation, and public dialogue.
Sol’s work explores themes of cosmology and collective consciousness; grounded in scholarly discourses of modernity and hegemony, her art investigates the psycho-spiritual dynamics shaping social disharmony and individual suffering.
She is influenced by personal experiences with homelessness, the prison industrial complex, as well as interpersonal violence. Her writing utilizes poetry and prose to ground systemic issues in memory and testimony.
Sol's movement practice—which draws from 20 years of classical training in various dance styles—serves as a form of ancestral veneration and cross-cultural exploration. Reliant foremost on the technical rigor and precision of her ballet and modern dance background, Sol’s movement vocabulary is agile and intuition based, emphasizing the animalistic and primordial intelligence found in somatic surrender.
She regards oration as a potent tool for effecting change, as informed by diasporic and feminist rhetorical traditions developed for worship and coalition building.
Truly interdisciplinary in nature and ever-expanding, Sols artistry oscillates mediums depending on the most suitable compartment for her philosophical inquiries.
